What is First?
First, stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It is an international youth organization. It operates the FIRST Robotics competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Lego league Jr. FIRST Robotics is the highest scale program FIRST has developed. Approximately 3,650 teams of high school students from 27 countries participate in the competition every year. The founders of FIRST is Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers. His vision was to inspire the next generation of technological leaders. Teams have six weeks to construct and program an immense robot. Thereafter, they are utilized to play a perplexing field game against other team robots with a new theme each year.
It encourages students to pursue their interest in STEM fields. With so few experiences for those interested in the field, FIRST robotics gives them the opportunity to exercise their skills and knowledge in an application similar to what they would encounter in the real world. There is a role for all in the First Robotics Competition. It is designed to inspire, encourage, and motivate students to learn basic principles while challenging more experienced students. There are a variety of vital roles including designing, building, fundraising, research, and marketing, in which any student will be able to actively participate. From this, students may discover if they are truly intrigued by STEM and wish to go forth in it. Furthermore, they can gain expertise from team members, mentors, and the process in general, leadership and teamwork skills, and self- confidence.
